Solar Panels in New York — $0 Down

Solar panels in New York are close to a no-brainer for homeowners — New York has some of the highest electricity rates in the country and some of the best solar incentives. You can go solar with $0 down, or own your system and claim valuable New York incentives. If your electric bill runs over $100/month, you may qualify.

Why New York is one of the best states for solar

  • High utility rates. Con Edison, PSEG Long Island, National Grid, NYSEG, and Orange & Rockland charge some of the steepest rates in the U.S. — so solar has a lot to offset.
  • Net metering. New York credits homeowners for the extra power their panels send to the grid (rules vary by utility — we'll explain what applies to you).
  • Strong incentives for owners (see below) — which can make buying a system especially attractive in New York.
  • Plenty of sun. New York gets more usable sunlight than people expect — panels produce year-round.

New York solar incentives — for homeowners who own their system

This is what makes New York special. If you own your solar system (by purchasing or financing it — not on a $0-down PPA), you may qualify for:

  • NY State Solar Tax Credit — 25% of your system cost, up to $5,000, statewide.
  • NYC Solar Property Tax Abatement — if your home is in New York City, a portion of your system cost (currently around 30%) can be credited against your property taxes over four years.
  • Plus any other federal or local incentives you may qualify for.

Incentives require owning the system, and eligibility and amounts depend on your situation and the latest program rules. Please consult a tax advisor to confirm what applies to you.

Two ways to go solar in New York

① $0 Down (Power Purchase Agreement)
No upfront cost, no loan, no system to buy. You simply pay for the power your panels produce — typically at a lower rate than your utility — and we handle maintenance, monitoring, and warranty. Best if you want savings with zero out-of-pocket cost. (Note: on a PPA the incentives above go to the system owner, not you.)

② Own Your System (purchase or finance)
You own the panels — so you may claim the NY State credit, the NYC property tax abatement, and other incentives you qualify for. Often the strongest long-term value in New York. We'll lay out the numbers both ways so you can choose.

Frequently asked questions

What incentives can I get for solar in New York?If you own your system, you may qualify for the NY State Solar Tax Credit (25%, up to $5,000), and — for homes in New York City — the NYC Solar Property Tax Abatement, plus other incentives you may be eligible for. These require owning the system, and amounts depend on your situation, so please consult a tax advisor.
Do I get those incentives on the $0-down option? No — on a $0-down PPA the system owner receives the incentives, not you. If claiming the incentives matters to you, the purchase/finance option is the way to own the system and qualify. We'll compare both for you.
Which utilities do you work with in NY?Con Edison, PSEG Long Island, National Grid, NYSEG, and Orange & Rockland.
Do I qualify? If you own your home and your electric bill is over $100/month, you likely may qualify for at least one option. The free estimate checks your roof, shading, and usage and shows you the numbers.
