Before you change anything, find out whether you are using more electricity or simply paying more for the same amount. Those are different problems and they have completely different solutions.
Your bill has the answer. Look at kilowatt-hours used, not the dollar total, and compare it against the same month last year.
If your usage is flat but the bill went up
Then your rate changed, and nothing you do inside the house will fix it.
In states with competitive supply markets, the supply portion of your bill resets periodically. If you never chose a third-party supplier, you are on your utility’s default rate, which is recalculated on a schedule and has trended upward across most of the Northeast. Delivery charges are regulated separately and also rise.
This is the category most homeowners misdiagnose. They spend a weekend swapping bulbs, see no improvement, and conclude that efficiency does not work — when the real issue was a price increase they never saw announced.
If your usage actually rose
Something in the house changed. These are the usual suspects, roughly in order of how often they turn out to be the cause.
- Weather. A hotter summer or colder winter than last year moves HVAC usage more than any other single factor. Compare against the same month, not last month.
- A second refrigerator or freezer. Older units in a garage or basement run constantly and are often decades past their efficient life.
- A dehumidifier running year-round. One of the most commonly overlooked always-on loads, especially in finished basements.
- A failing appliance. A refrigerator with a bad door seal, an HVAC system low on refrigerant or a water heater with a failed element all draw far more than they should.
- A well pump or sump pump cycling too often. Frequent cycling usually indicates a problem worth fixing on its own merits.
- Electric water heating. Typically the second largest load in a home after heating and cooling.
- A new EV. Charging at home can add meaningfully to monthly usage — often worth it against gasoline, but it will show up on this bill.
- More people home. A household that shifted to remote work uses substantially more during the day.
How to find an always-on load
Many utilities publish hourly or daily usage in their online portal, and it is the fastest diagnostic available to you.
Look at the overnight hours when the house is asleep. That figure is your baseline — the electricity you consume no matter what. If it is high and never dips, something is running continuously. Turning off circuits one at a time and watching the baseline the next night will usually isolate it within a week.
A plug-in energy monitor on suspect appliances costs very little and settles the question outright.
What to do about each cause
If usage is the problem, the free steps come first: set a thermostat schedule that reflects when you are actually home, lower the water heater to around 120°F, and hunt down the always-on loads. Then air sealing and attic insulation, which in older Northeastern housing stock usually outperform window replacement per dollar spent.
If the rate is the problem, efficiency helps but it cannot win on its own. Cutting usage 15% while rates rise 8% nets you 7%, and next year you have to find another 15% from a house you already optimized.
That is the specific case where solar changes the structure rather than the quantity: it replaces a portion of your electricity with supply at a price you have fixed in advance. It is not a fit for every home — heavy shading, a roof near end of life, a very low bill, or a likely move within a couple of years all argue against it.

Why did my bill double in one month?
Most often a seasonal HVAC swing combined with a rate change, or an estimated read being corrected by an actual read. Check whether the bill says estimated — a catch-up read after several estimates can produce a large one-time bill.
Do phantom loads really matter?
Individually they are small. Collectively, devices drawing standby power add up, though far less than a second refrigerator or a dehumidifier. Chase the large always-on loads before worrying about phone chargers.
Is a smart thermostat worth it?
For most households, yes, mainly because it enforces a schedule people intend to keep and do not. The savings come from the schedule, not the hardware.
Will solar fix a high bill?
It addresses the price of your electricity, not the amount you use. If your bill is high because of a rate increase and your roof is suitable, it fits well. If it is high because a failing appliance is running constantly, fix that first.
