What it actually looks like
On asphalt shingles, hail knocks granules loose and leaves soft dark spots where the mat underneath is exposed. It is often easier to see the evidence somewhere else first: dents on gutters, downspouts, vents, or the metal on a grill lid. If those are dented, the roof took the same hits.
Why it matters even without a leak
The granule layer is the shingle’s UV protection. Once it is gone in patches, that area ages faster than the rest of the roof. The leak comes later, which is why hail damage is worth documenting when it happens rather than when it drips.
The order that keeps your options open
Photograph and date what you can see from the ground. Note the date of the storm. Get the roof looked at by somebody who will show you photos of what they found rather than just telling you.
