The four things that move the price
Square footage is the obvious one. The three that surprise people are pitch, layers, and decking.
A steep roof costs more because the crew works slower and needs more safety setup. A roof carrying two old layers costs more because both have to come off. And decking — the wood under the shingles — is the one nobody can price until the old roof is off. If it is soft or rotted, it gets replaced, and that is a real line item, not an upsell.
How to read a quote
Ask any roofer for the tear-off, the decking allowance, the underlayment, the shingle line, and the labour, separately. A company that will not break those out is asking you to trust a single number.
Also ask what happens if they find bad decking. The honest answer is a per-sheet price agreed before work starts.
When a roof can wait
Plenty can. If your shingles are lying flat, the granules are still on them, and there are no leaks or daylight in the attic, you may have years left. A roofer who tells every homeowner they need a full replacement is not inspecting, they are selling.

Yes — panels last decades, so putting them on a roof with a few years left means paying to remove and reinstall them later. If your roof is near the end, doing both together is usually the cheaper order of operations.
